Al-Dog... Smiling through the tears

We have been reminiscing our favorite stories about Uncle Al.  He led such a charmed life.  Remembering these good times makes it a little easier to work through the sadness.

He was with me through several seasons of my life.  I got him from my parents as a Christmas present in 1997.  He was with me through times of heart break, sadness, joy, weekend road trips to Baton Rouge, several Mr. Wrongs, Mr. Right, hurricane Katrina, my wedding, many moves, and the birth of his 3 brothers.  Much like the commercial for Bush's baked beans.  He knew the family secrets and wasn't telling!  He knew me better than anyone else.  He was great to talk to.  He would just lay his head on my lap and listen as I cried many tears of both sadness and joy.  He was the greatest friend and companion.

He has been such a part of our family for so long that today I still imagine the sound of his nail tapping as he walked through the house.  I also glance into his room expecting to see him every time I walk past the doorway.  I know it will get easier with time, but today the hurt is very real.

Enough tears for now.  Let's celebrate my pal Al.  The greatest dog in the world...

Alex as a puppy.
He was such a tough guy!

  • Over the years Alex went by many different names:  Al, Al-Dog, Cornbread, Sally, and Uncle Al.

  • Here is a random thought that I think of often.  When I picked my puppy I picked a boy.  I wonder if God blessed me with all boys because when I had the chance to pick my "child" that is what I selected.  Weird?  Perhaps, but He does have a sense of humor!

  • I vividly remember when I was deciding to get a puppy I thought about how I would feel when he was no longer with me.  In my mind I figured I would have him for about 12 years.  I hoped that the 12 years of joy that he would bring would outweigh the sadness when it was time to tell him good-bye.  My boy exceeded my expectations on both the number of years that he was with me and also the amount of joy that he brought.

  • Al used to love to come out to my parents cabin with us.  That was his puppy heaven.  He would run for days.  We would open the door once we hit the drive way and let him run free and meet us at the cabin.  On 2 separate occasions Kenton tried to KILL him.  Well, not really but we still laugh about it.  Kenton was on the 4-wheeler with Al chasing him from behind.  Once they made it back to the cabin Alex passed out from heat exhaustion.  We did have to call the vet to figure out what to do.  Once we pick up Alex's ashes we will bring them out to the cabin and release his ashes into the woods.  This was his heaven on earth...

  • Back in the day Alex was a total wild man.  On a few occasions he got out and roamed the streets through the night before returning home.  When he finally would return home he passed out for days.  Who in the world knows what that crazy dog was up to.  Until the end he never confess his whereabouts to me!

  • Alex was such my dog.  He loved to costume with us.  He wore bandanas, party hats, football jerseys, and halloween costumes.  Not only did he wear it, but he wore it with a smile!  He loved to come to Mardi Gras parades with us.  Our house was just off the parade route.  On Mardi Gras day every year we would dress him up and take to the parades.  It was such fun!

  • Alex has been a part of my relationship with Kenton from day one.  The other day Kenton said, "thank God for Uncle Al.  He gave me a paws up before you did!"  Alex adored Satch from the moment that he sniffed him.  They became fast friend and had such good times together.  Satch always took him out to the park to throw the ball and for walks every chance that he got.  They really did adore each other.  Al came with us to take our engagement pictures.  He was a total wild man that day at Audubon Park.  We always laugh at this picture because he looks nice and calm.  This was sooooo not the case!

  • One Saturday morning (long before our boys were born) Satch took Al to the park to play catch. I was at home sitting on the chair reading the newspaper.  All of a sudden I heard Satch yelling from down the street.  "Open the door, please Andrea OPEN the door."  Well, my first instinct was that he was being robbed and thought NO WAY JOSE am I opening this door!  :)  I barely peeked out the shade to see Satch running down the street carrying our 70 pound dog in his arms and there was blood.  Of course my mind then went to Al was hit by a car.  By the time they made it home Satch was a wreck.  My OCD then kicked in.  I grabbed a towel, as to not dirty the car, grabbed the keys and raced off to the vet.  Long story short they lost the tennis ball.  On the last throw of the morning Satch threw a stick that lodged in Alex's mouth.  We all know how much the mouth bleeds.  We still laugh at him yelling down the street and me thinking about whether or not to open the door.

Alex and Satch- Besties!

  • Kenton took such good care of Alex.  They were best friends.  I witnessed the love that he had for him until the very end.  I always knew that Kenton would be a good husband and father, but I have now also witnessed him as a care giver.  When I get old and grey I will be in the most capable and loving hands.  His love for Al was so unconditional...

  • Al's appointment was for 5:30 yesterday afternoon.  When Kenton got home yesterday he told me that he got to the vet at 5:25 and drove around the block until 5:30.  He said that he just couldn't bring him in a minute early.  I so love this man and his heart...

  • As I said he loved and cared for him until the very end.  Kenton said that after Alex took his last breath he had an accident on the table and he cleaned it up.  He said that he just couldn't let him lay in a mess.  My husband... such a compassionate, caring, and gentle soul.

Today we are sad, but smile as we think of all of the great memories that we have shared with Alex.  I just know that he is pain free and running wild at his puppy palace in the sky.  As they say "All dogs go to heaven."  Until we meet again my friend...

My Pal Al...

October 19, 1997- August 10, 2012

Today we said good-bye to Al-Dog.  It was a very sad day.  My eyes have been leaking since I placed the call to the vet on Monday.  One of those things that you know in your heart that you are doing the right thing but it still hurts so very badly.

Al has been my faithful friend and companion for almost 15 years.  He has been through several seasons of my life and has taught me a lesson on the purest unconditional love.  He was my first son.  Over the years with the addition of our 3 children he took a back seat.  He was okay with that and was happy with a throw of the tennis ball and a pat on the head.

He lived a rich life and we are blessed with some great memories!  He brought us so much joy.  Some of his favorite things to do was play catch with a tennis ball, run free at the cabin, and snuggle with Kenton while watching TV and eating popcorn.

We spent our final afternoon at home with Uncle Al.  Kenton gave him a snack of one of his faves, Vienna Sausage and we went outside for family pictures.  We then each said our final good-byes to him.  It was so very hard.  When Kenton returned from the vet I could hear the boys talking to their Daddy.  Griff asked where Alex was?  Kenton told him that he went on a trip.  Roman then ran up to me and said, "Mommy.... Alex gone."  Words of such truth...

I am just happy that he is no longer suffering and in pain.  Alex- Until we meet again run free at your puppy palace in the sky.  You were so loved...

One of my favorite pictures of my boys.

Such good memories at our uptown house.
Even at his ripe old age he was still working.
Here he is guarding Cohen a few weeks ago.

They had such a sweet bond.
Oh how I love these boys.

Birthday Princess

I love to celebrate a birthday.
Including my own!

I've been this way my entire life.
An entire day to celebrate "you" (or me)
is alright by me!

This year may have been my favorite birthday yet.
I was surrounded by my favorite people and enjoyed EVERYTHING about the day!

Even though we were not at home I still woke up to decorations
and enjoyed breakfast on the special birthday place mat.

Doesn't this just bring a smile to your face.
Starting my day off with these two precious faces with party hats = AWESOME!

Our special red place mat for the birthday boy/girl!

Momma and her boys.

The final "a" charm for my bracelet.
Thanks Satch.

Seriously.... what a great start to a new year!
Hanging on the beach with my boys!

Next favorite thing:
pictures with my peeps!
I am usually the photographer and don't have many
pictures with my boys.

Woah... are these some beautiful faces or what?!?

Greatest gift for Momma~
a family picture to remind me of our awesome vacation!

Next up?
Dinner with my boys followed by "happy birthday to you"
in our party hats.
I get the princess crown (of course) for the evening.

Why?
Because it is good to be queen!

Thanks to my boys for my extra special birthday
and great start to my next year of life!

Weekend away...

I went to a ladies retreat this weekend,
"Stories worth telling."

It felt funny driving away from the house
with only a small overnight bag.

I listened to some courageous women
tell their stories.

I met some new people,
spent some time with an old friend,
and talked to Jesus.

The hardest part for me was the quiet time.
When was the last time
that I had 1 hour of silence?
This quiet time was good for my soul.

A Mother's Love...

 Dear Roman,

As I was nursing you this morning I wanted to burn into my brain the images that I have adored over the past 9 months.  I was in "our spot" thinking back over the countless hours that we have shared in that very position.  You melt me every time that you look up at me with your big blue eyes and your smile finishes the job.  Our bond is very strong and I know that it was strengthened by this special time that we share.  It pleases me to say that we are a good team.  You have been a joy and our hard work shows.  I am often stopped by strangers to admire the "healthy baby."

I don't think back and remember the lack of sleep that comes with round the clock feedings.  I think back on this experience with precious memories.  I am so happy that I was able and you were willing to accept this gift from Mommy...
I never tire of that "milk drunk" look.
You are laid out and oh so comfy in your favorite position.

Twirling your hair in your soothing way...

Sweet baby, we worked so hard for those chubby toes...
All my love,
Mommy

It's good to be queen...

Imagine this....
It is Sunday morning and eerily quiet.

You enjoy the extra few minutes of sleep.

You open your eyes
to 3 handsome men with big smiles
serving you breakfast in bed.

It is good to be queen.

He said She said...

Okay so here is the real story regarding "Dudes Day Out!" Earlier in the week Satch told me that he was thinking about taking the boys out Saturday morning for a bit. Of course I asked for a little more information. He said that it would be a surprise. Here is a little excerpt from our conversation:

Satch- "You know kinda like in that movie."

Me- "Which movie."

Satch-"You know the movie when they just looked at the pictures after the event and tried to piece the night back together?"

Me- "THE HANGOVER?!?"

Okay, it is not that I don't like surprise I was just a little curious due to his reference of the Hangover. What did he mean? Would he stick Roman in a closet and Griffin would come back minus a tooth? Was he planning to hang out with Mike Tyson, a tiger, and a kung fu guy?

Considering that Roman and Griffin are 1.5 his children I figured that he would at some point make it back home safe and sound with both of them in tow. As a matter of fact once they returned home I sort of wished they would have stayed out a bit longer. ;)

That my friends is the rest of the story.

The end!

Reasons that I smile~ Saturday morning dance party

This morning I had the house speakers on when we sat down for lunch~ homemade pizza. All of a sudden our pizza party became a dance party. The train song came over the speakers and it took a hold of all of us. Gotta LOVE a beat that you just can't resist! Momma, Daddy, and Griffin were jamming. (in a white family sort of way ;) ) We did the train three laps around the house and were belly laughing. You know the kind of laugh that you may pee on yourself and it doesn't even matter? Yeah, it was that kind of belly laugh!

Griffin picking the moves for Daddy to follow. Griff has always been a fan of "getting low."

I love to see my baby having fun...

MOPS Christmas ornament exchange

Today I hosted a Christmas ornament exchange for my MOPS group. (mothers of preschoolers) I joined the group with heavy persuasion from Kenton. Each week at church they would promote the local chapter of MOPS. It is not that I didn't want to join, but I just didn't know how much I would be able to participate/contribute considering that I work 3 days a week. I decided to give it a go and I'm so happy that I did. I randomly picked a seat at the same table as some pretty amazing women and mothers. We are all very diverse, but mesh very well together. We have children ranging in age from 6 years- 7 months and another on the way! We got together at my house today for great food, fun for the kids, adult conversation for the moms and lots of Christmas cheer!

Yes, I love parties! I just do... I love a reason to make pretty things and share with others.
Since the moms were exchanging ornaments I thought it was only fair that the kiddos would go home with an ornament too! These cute little reindeer were compliments of Griffin and Roman.
Boys will be boys! They are just made that way. They could not get enough of the Christmas train.
And girls will be girls. Sweet and dainty little ones...
We did not have a shortage of boys today!
Cupcake time! Looks like fun right? Too bad I don't have an "after" picture of me with the dirt devil cleaning the aftermath. My options were to clean it right away or buy a new rug. Yeah, they made it rain!

Roman..... in arms ALL DAY! I have a situation on my hands with this one. He is just so cute, squishy and cuddly!
Emma~ Miss Thang! I heart the flower in her hair. The bigger the better!
Paul is about to destroy cute Mr. Reindeer.
We were able to spend a fun day with our precious children.
And say goodbye to Janell~ our faithful table leader. Good bye Friend~ until we meet again! Best of luck with your new life!!
I love this photograph. It sums it all up for me!
Just a few dudes and a bounce house.

This looks like a little guy convention. They all played well together!
And for the grand finale a group shot. How hard can this be? Okay.... let's set up the shot. Thanks to Nate the most fabulous FOUR YEAR old photographer. Here we go...
Okay, almost..... Let's give it another try.
Wait.... is this thing on????
Guys wait for me!!!
Merry Christmas to all!!
